About To Write Art
Many people fall in love with art. In their pursuit of expanding their creativity, they enter art schools, take private classes, learn online, or experiment on their own. Traditional art education provides the foundations essential for artistic success — composition, anatomy, light and shadow, diverse mediums, art history, and contemporary practice. This knowledge is invaluable.
But what happens after these foundations are mastered? What happens when technique is no longer the obstacle, but creating something original becomes the limitation?
This is where the gap appears — not in skill, but in original thought.
To Write Art was created to address what traditional education often cannot. Our programs do not teach you how to make art. They teach you how to think about art differently. They ask questions most courses avoid. They explore territories most curricula rarely enter. They challenge assumptions, encourage reflection, and invite participants to confront ideas that have no single answer.
Every student engages differently because there is no prescribed outcome. Our programs are designed for self-exploration in the truest sense — you will not find what we want you to find. You will find what you are willing to see. We encourage participants to record not only what they observe, but also what they question, value, remember, believe, and experience. The aim is not to transform observation into form, but reflection and self into creation.
Unlike traditional art courses, To Write Art is a self-directed, reading-based program designed for independent and self-motivated learners. The complete program is provided as a PDF and is intended to be worked through at your own pace, allowing you to engage with the material according to your schedule, interests, and circumstances. There are no workshops, no teacher directing your progress, no deadlines, and no monitoring of your work. The responsibility for engagement rests entirely with the participant.
This approach is not for everyone, and it was never intended to be. Self-directed learning requires curiosity, personal responsibility, and a willingness to engage with uncertainty. However, for those who are ready, it can offer something difficult to find elsewhere: the freedom to explore ideas without comparison, expectation, or external direction.
Working independently allows participants to engage deeply with their own thoughts and creative processes. It provides space to question, reflect, experiment, and develop ideas without the pressure of keeping pace with others or seeking approval. For many people, this freedom becomes one of the most valuable aspects of the experience.
Every section of the program has been included for a reason and contributes to the overall structure and philosophy of To Write Art. Rather than teaching drawing techniques, composition, or traditional artistic methods, the program explores how ideas are generated, where inspiration originates, how meaning is constructed, and how art can be understood from multiple perspectives.
Each program generally includes:
A start and end mind map with reflective questions
Written content (typically 3–6 pages)
One or two creative tasks
Learning objectives
Reflective processes
Helpful hints and suggested approaches
A self-evaluation section
Participants also have the option to engage in the Weekly Self Check-In process. Participation is entirely voluntary, but many find it valuable as a tool for reflection, accountability, and personal growth.
Artwork submissions are optional and are only required for those seeking a Certificate of Completion. Participants may submit one artwork, multiple artworks, or no artwork at all.
Submitted artworks are not scored, judged, critiqued, or provided with feedback. This reflects the philosophy of To Write Art: creative exploration should not be shaped by external approval, personal taste, or prescribed expectations. The program encourages participants to independently explore ideas, memories, beliefs, experiences, and creative decisions without external influence directing the outcome.
While the program is designed for independent study, participants are welcome to contact us at any time to ask questions, share thoughts, discuss challenges, or talk about their experiences. Equally, many choose to work through the program privately, and that approach is equally respected.
To Write Art is ultimately an invitation to think differently — about art, creativity, meaning, and yourself. It is intended for those who are curious, reflective, and willing to explore uncertainty in pursuit of deeper creative understanding.
The Programs
To Write Art currently offers three 12-month programs: Perception, Non-Human Art, and Art Intersections.
Each program can be explored individually, in any order, or studied as a complete journey. All three provide unconventional concepts, creative tasks, reflective processes, and philosophical approaches designed to expand artistic thinking.
Our Programs
Perception — Teaches students to see and feel in new ways
Non-Human Art — Removes human-centred creative limitations
Art Intersections — Explores the hidden systems and frameworks that influence art
Ultimate Goals
Expand creativity beyond conventional boundaries
Develop an authentic artistic voice through self-discovery
Understand art as a multidimensional exploration of thought
Build resilience and confidence within the creative process
Create work that reveals how the artist thinks, not simply what the artist has been taught
